Architecture: For a planned Career

An interface between the client and the team of builders, a architect visualizes on paper what the builders will eventually translate into a dream building

Architecture is a modern challenging course. It is a multi disciplinary engineering course where the student will learn a wide range of subjects-from Technical drawing and elements of design to elements of civil engineering. An architect needs to know macro issues in town planning , government approvals and regulations relating to construction of building and finances.

The ideal architect combines the skills of the designer, engineer and visualiser with that of a communications expect.

Courses

Bachelor if Architecture(B.Arch) and Master of Architecture(M.Arch)

Eligibility

B.Arch: 10+2 (senior secondary, Class XII) or equivalent referred to as the qualifying examination from a recognized Board/ University with a minimum of 50% marks in science subjects(Physics, Chemistry and mathematics). Besides this, the candidate must qualify an entrance examination. The duration of course is five years

M.Arch: B.Arc and the duration will be three semesters. At the masters level , specialization is offered in landscape architecture, Architectural conservation, urban design, building engineering& management, environment planning, housing, transport planning, regional planning, town and country planning, industrial design etc.

Admission

Admission to Bachelor of Architecture in various colleges of India is through national and state level entrance examinations.

The CBSE conducts a national level entrance examination (AIEEE)- for entry into B. Architecture and B.Planning in government and private institutes.

Entrance to Architecture programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs) is through the national level joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

Different states also hold separate entrance exams for admission to Architecture and engineering colleges in the state. Some private institutes conduct entrance exams of their own also.

Generally the entrance paper consists of mathematics and a drawing test. The drawing exam is conducted by the National Institute of Advanced Studies and Architecture in association with the Council of Architecture(COA)

Job Opportunities for qualified and experienced architects will continue to increase with the urbanization. Typically, Architects find employment in architectural and construction firms, consultancies, municipal bodies, town planning agencies, landscaping consultancies, corporation offices, government departments etc. New awareness about eco-friendly architecture, revival of traditional architectural forms, introduction of software technology in the field of architecture have all contributed to healthy trends in this field. Renovation of old historical monuments is also a challenge to the architect. This is a field that allows for self employment also. Thus the opportunities for the trained and skilled architect are many and excellent
